I read an article today that rang so true I just had to comment on it. It talks about the increasing trend of bans on particular breeds of dog in many localities around the world. The author of the article explains that banning a breed only hurts those responsible, law-abiding dog owners who are already properly training and restraining their dogs. The idiots who don't take the time to care for and train their dogs, or worse, train them to fight or attack, are not going to suddenly stop owning a particular breed of dog just because it is banned. I had neighbors a couple of years ago who were evicted for owning a pit bull, even though their dog was the sweetest, most well-behaved and well cared for dog in the building. We need to concentrate on enacting and enforcing animal cruelty, leash and penning laws, and stop punishing those responsible dog owners whose dogs are not hurting anyone.
And the same goes for any type of ban. For example, ban alcoholic beverages, and only responsible social drinkers will be hurt. Those with out-of-control addictions who cannot control themselves when they are drinking, will still find a way to get their liquor and will still drink, beat their spouses and children, and kill innocent people in drunk driving accidents. A ban is not going to stop that, any more than banning a dog breed is going to stop attacks by poorly treated dogs.
