If you want to get a little bit smarter, say, every week or so, then there are three web sites you can't afford to miss.
This is True is a weekly newspaper column and free e-mail publication (or you can spring for the premium edition, which is well worth the $24 a year) highlighting some of the more bizarre happenings in the news, along with writer Randy Cassingham's humorous and often thought-provoking commentary. When you subscribe you'll quickly learn about Randy's pet peeve issues, such as zero-tolerance policies and frivolous lawsuits (which, not-so-coincidentally, leads us to site #2)...
The True Stella Awards, which I've talked about before, are another project of Randy's. This slightly less frequent publication highlights real case studies of abuses of our judicial system. In addition to providing some "what-the-hell?!"-style entertainment, the TSAs promote thoughtful discussion on fixing a broken system and modern society's trends toward placing blame and responsibility for one's problems on anyone but oneself. The publishing schedule is a bit unpredictable, but each issue is well worth the wait.
While the Stella Awards center around frivolous lawsuits, the Darwin Awards are given to persons who remove themselves from the gene pool by way of their own stupid actions. And like the Stella Awards, there are fake Darwin Award stories that have been circulating in cyberspace for years. But on her official Darwin Awards site, Wendy Northcutt tackles all of the stories, debunking the fake ones and confirming the true ones. No, it's not another Randy Cassingham production, but that is how I came upon it - it was recently featured in the "Bonzer Site of the Week" section of This is True.
