(updated - see below)
As everyone knows, the winter holiday season includes many different holidays celebrated by many different cultures, even though Christmas gets most of the spotlight. I happen to celebrate Christmas, but I can honestly say that I recognize and respect that there are other cultures, religions, and holidays out there. And I am of course not offended at the mention of a holiday I might not celebrate.
The powers that be at Wicked Karma, however, believe their listeners will be offended by mention of holidays they don't celebrate. We DJs have been instructed not to mention any specific holidays, nor play any holiday-specific music, this holiday season.
Now, to ask us to include as many cultures as possible, to give Happy Hanukkah and Kwanzaa wishes along with our Merry Christmases, etc, would be more than reasonable. It's something I would do anyway without any prompting from management (I probably don't know of all of the holidays being celebrated, but I would do my best). But to assume that listeners are going to be offended if we mention any holiday they don't personally celebrate, is ridiculous, and in my opinion, insults the listeners' intelligence.
One of the things I liked about Wicked Karma when I joined as a DJ, was the freedom they gave their DJs, the laid-back attitude, and the freedom to get away with things that traditional airwave radio stations can't. This is so opposite from the Wicked Karma philosophy I've come to know, I can't even make sense of it. It's truly political correctness gone insane.
By the way, if you have any opinions about this directive, you can find e-mail addresses for all of the members of Wicked Karma management on the web site, under the "Crew" section, category "Management". You can also express your opinions on the forums.
update:
Shortly after the writing of this article, the Wicked Karma management came to their senses and lifted the "no-holiday" rule. I want to thank those of my readers and listeners who expressed their feelings to the management, and the management for recognizing that their DJs and listeners are a diverse group of intelligent people who can tolerate and even embrace each other's differences.
