- Doting owners get 'peternity leave' if the dog is feeling ruff
Some businesses in the UK are introducing policies allowing employees to take paid time off from work to care for sick or injured pets, as well as extending bereavement leave to cover the loss of a pet, in recognition of the important place pets hold in many people's lives. One can only hope that US companies will follow suit.
- Pledges for Pets Telethon a tail-wagging success
The Dumb Friends League of Denver, Colorado held its annual Pledges for Pets Telethon last Sunday. The organization operates two animal shelters in the region, one in Denver and one in Castle Rock. This year's record-breaking telethon raised more than $210,000 to support the shelters.
- Pets thrown out after tragic attack
Experts from animal rescue centers and kennels across Manchester, UK are urging calm and common sense, as hundreds of dogs of various ill-reputed breeds are being abandoned after the tragic attack and death of a five-year-old girl by a pitbull terrier on New Year's Day. They emphasize that there are no bad breeds of dog, only bad training.
- Bill would protect pets in abuse cases
The Utah state legislature is considering a bill that would allow protective orders issued by courts in cases of domestic abuse to include pets. Many abused spouses refuse to leave their abusers without knowing that their pets will be safe. Similar laws have already been passed in Maine, Vermont and New York.
- Therapet: Helping clients and pets in need
AIDS Community Care Montreal offers its clients who own pets an affordable veterinary care program known as Therapet. The program includes a twice yearly vaccination clinic, for which clients are asked only to pay for the cost of the medicines, and are given the flexibility of a payment plan if they cannot afford to pay the bill right away.
