I've been watching the new show Brothers & Sisters on ABC. One of the ongoing themes is the extreme differences in political views between Kitty, played by Calista Flockhart, and other members of her family. And I find that possibly one of the reasons I like the show is because, in a way, I can relate to that. Although, unlike me, Kitty has the courage to go on national television and express her views, and makes no apologies to those in her family who disagree. I, on the other hand, avoid political discussion like the plague, because I just don't want to experience that conflict.
On certain issues, my views are the opposite of just about everyone else in my life. I know that on these issues I am in the minority, or at least it seems so from what I hear from people on the matters. And that makes me sad, but I know that I'm not going to change any minds, any more than anyone is going to change mine. So, because I don't want the kind of damage in my relationships with people that exists in Kitty's relationship with her mother, I don't say anything. When someone forwards me an e-mail that flaunts an opinion I don't share, I just delete it, even though there a million things I'd like to say in response. I don't say the things I'd like to say, because I just want to get along.
But sometimes I wish people would just stop sending me those e-mails.
