There seems to be a lot of Google bashing going on lately. So I just wanted to go on record to say: I Google!
A lot of Google's latest projects center around replacing applications that one would normally run locally on their own computer, with applications that instead run on the web. I love this trend. The ability to access my e-mail, calendar, documents & spreadsheets, personal notes and more, no matter where I go, is my vision of the future. I've thought a lot about what the future may be like, and I envision a world where we can sit down at a terminal anywhere in the world, log in, and be able to access our own desktops as if we were in front of our own PC at home. The problem people have with this - aside from privacy and security concerns, which I agree are an issue but one I think can be solved - is fear of unreliability. That an outage on Google's end will leave a person stranded without access to their files. Sure, it happens from time to time, but I can honestly count more times that I have been locked out of my information due to power outages at home, and hard drive and other hardware failures on my own computer, than times I have been affected by Google outages. At least, with my files stored remotely, I can still access them when my own computer is down. And, over time, as bandwidth and server technologies evolve, Google's outages, which are already few and far between, will become even less frequent.
The other thing that people seem to love to pick on is Google's "do no evil" mantra. Some have themselves convinced that it is only a matter of time before Google crosses to the dark side. Well, I'm sorry, but I have never seen any actions from Google that would give me any reason to doubt their commitment to remaining a socially and morally responsible company. What amuses me most is that some of this Google bashing comes from the same people I see denouncing the common pastime of bashing another company... Microsoft. Yes, I will admit that the Microsoft-bashing sometimes gets a little bit ridiculous, but they've brought much of it on themselves. Now we're talking about a company that has undeniably committed some evil acts (anyone remember Mike Rowe?), and they've earned the reputation they've got. What has Google done to deserve all this hatred, besides trying to promise people what they've been demanding all along?
