HeroicStories is an e-mail publication which attempts to show that you don't have to risk your life or show amazing physical strength to be considered a hero. The stories they publish emphasize that the smallest, seemingly insignificant actions can have a profound, heroic effect on someone's life.
There have been a few people in my life who have been heroes to me at one time or another. Though they probably thought their actions were no big deal at the time, they did have a huge effect on me for which I'm very grateful. I want to... no, I have to be sure to eventually thank each and every one of them and let them know how much their actions meant to me. Right now I want to thank the two I've been thinking about the most lately.
DC... though I know you knew about the huge crush I had on you, you never teased me, embarrassed me, or even mentioned it. You gave your sister and me rides wherever we wanted to go, and you were always the perfect gentleman, lifting me up when I couldn't get into your parents' van (I forgive you for that time you hit my head, really I do!). You made a point of dancing with me at the church dance on my birthday, when you saw me leaning against the wall, alone. And my freshman year in high school, you saw me eating lunch by myself and you invited me to your table... from that point on I had a whole group of friends to eat with every day. Even if I was lonely the whole rest of the day, at lunchtime I knew I had you guys, and that's what kept me going through a very difficult couple of years. I was often jealous of your sister... I wished I had a big brother like you. But then, I guess I did...
KJ... when I invited you to my school's Homecoming dance my sophomore year, I didn't really expect you to say yes considering the 2 1/2-hour drive each way. But you came... and you were the only date I ever had for a school dance. My self-esteem wasn't the greatest, and many of the kids I went to school with weren't very kind. To be able to walk in there with a date, especially someone who had driven that far just to take me to a dance, made me feel so good about myself. It was quite possibly the sweetest thing anyone ever did for me.
