Here he is, our new little troublemaker! Oh, yes, he looks so sweet and innocent... but looks can be deceiving! Just when he's got you thinking you're his best friend in the whole wild world, suddenly you're missing a big toe!
I kid... he may have a bit of a devilish side, but he really is a sweetheart. Yes, he is obsessed with eating toes, but he's also just about the most affectionate puppy I've ever seen. He loves giving kisses, and all he wants is to be close to you - all the time.
The trip home with him went really well, all things considered. He tolerated the first two hours or so in the carrier, with a few complaints but sleeping most of the time, which is pretty impressive for a puppy this age. He slept in my lap, perfectly behaved and no squirming, for the whole rest of the drive (about seven hours).
When it was time to go to bed a couple of hours after we got home, I thought we'd be in for a rough night. We decided to put him in the bathroom with a potty pad, some blankets to sleep on, and his water dish - with a gate in the doorway and both doors open so we could hear him if he got into trouble. I honestly expected him to cry for some time before settling down, and then again every couple of hours. He cried for exactly two minutes before falling asleep, and slept the whole night. I even got up at one point to make sure he was still alive.
But my, how things can change in one day. By yesterday evening he was starting to feel more at home and get a bit more rambunctious. Chris played with him for a while before bed to wear him out, but as soon as he put him in the bathroom, he was wide awake again. He whined and cried and screamed, and we tried to wait it out, but it just kept getting more high-pitched and desperate. It turned out he had gotten his little claws stuck on the gate while jumping up against it. After unsticking him we tried again, and again he just kept wailing until Chris came to get him. They went back out to the living room and played for another hour until he started getting sleepy again. But once back in bed, the screaming started again. This time he quieted down after ten or fifteen minutes, with exception of a small whimper every few minutes. We finally got to sleep, and all was quiet the rest of the night... until I woke up at about 6:30 to a whimper that sounded just a little too close. I opened my eyes, and there was Brooskey, lying on the floor right next to the bed, looking up at me.
Apparently when our little Houdini woke back up in the middle of the night, he decided to skip the crying this time and just find his way out on his own. Yes, on only his second night behind that gate, he figured out how to climb up and over it. This dog is smart, and it spells T-R-O-U-B-L-E!
