This past week or so it's been quiet both here and on the news pages. Besides being extremely busy at work and not having as much time to find news stories and things to write about, there have been other things thrown in to distract me.
Last Saturday, Chris' best friend's beautiful, sweet mother lost her battle with cancer. It was something we knew was coming, but didn't expect this soon. She was vibrant, active, and seemingly healthy to those who didn't know what she was going through, right up until just a few days before her death. She was 48 years young.
Of course, there was no question that we would do everything humanly possible to be there for Joe and his family in their grief. We stayed at the funeral home for over four hours during the wake Wednesday night. The turnout was incredible. This amazing woman had so many friends and touched so many lives, that the line of people waiting to pay their respects wound through two empty chapels and out the front door of the funeral home, and stayed that way for nearly five hours. The final count from the guest book was 911. The funeral itself was equally amazing. The procession was probably a mile long - we thought we were toward the back of line until we looked back and realized we couldn't see the back of the line.
In the midst of all this, my sister gave birth to a gorgeous baby boy, Dylan Bryton-Lee, last Tuesday evening. And so I've become an aunt again. I'll be flying out in just over two weeks, and can't wait to hold this precious little angel in my arms for the first time.
It may take me a little bit longer to completely get over my writer's block, but I promise I will be back.
