Yesterday, a neighbor's dog was taken right out from under her owner's nose by two coyotes, right behind our building. They keep trying to assure us that it's rare for a coyote to approach with humans around, but I'm sorry, I'm not buying it. If these two did it once, they'll do it again... not to mention I've heard from others who see them come around humans all the time.
We always had coyotes in our neighborhood back home when I was growing up, but they never scared me that much. I can think of only one or two occasions when they made me nervous enough to go inside. But there's something about having them here in the city that really scares me. Maybe it's the fact that everything is closer together in the city, or the lack of fencing... or the fact that those coyotes back home never did come right into the yard when we were outside. I'm scared for my dog, and even for myself.
And I just want to cry for that poor dog. I didn't know these people or their dog personally, but my mind keeps replaying the image of this little thing being whipped around and ripped to shreds by these two vicious animals, and the terror she must have felt in those last moments...
