- Belgian group warns Yahoo, awaits Google ruling
A Belgian copyright management group is demanding that Google and Yahoo, and presumably other search engines, stop caching copies of Belgian press reports - a move that flies in the face of the principles upon which the world wide web was founded. Rather than have information freely available to anyone at any time, Copiepresse wants information to be freely available only for as long as they choose to make it so.
- Microsoft to make Vista available online
For the first time ever, Microsoft plans to make its next Windows operating system available for online purchase and download. The program is aimed at current Windows XP users who want to upgrade without buying a new computer.
- 'Storm' Worm Continues Surge Around Globe
If you think you've been getting a lot more spam lately, you're right. The reason is the "Storm" worm, the spammers' latest weapon to make their spam go out more efficiently and make themselves harder to catch. If your computer is infected, you are doing the work for them.
- Apple patches QuickTime bug
A wake up call to those who think they are safe from security holes and hacking attempts just because they use a Mac - Apple's own QuickTime software contains a vulnerability that affects both Windows and Mac OSX users. The vulnerability was published as part of the "Month of Apple Bugs" project, which has released details of a different previously undisclosed OSX or Apple software security bug every day this month.
- First Vista PC Tests
PC World's benchmark tests of the first computers to be shipped with Windows Vista preloaded show that even sub-$1,000 machines can handle running the operating system. But, some of the highly publicized new features of the OS are missing in these early systems. Many PC manufacturers are choosing to continue shipping their products with Windows XP installed for now, due to concern over Vista's driver readiness.
