When we received our invitation to a Halloween costume party last month, I had no clue what to dress up as. When I was young my mom would usually make my costume, or piece it together from items bought at thrift stores. I put together my own costume once several years ago when we hosted a party: I was a Cabbage Patch Kid (I simply put my hair in pigtails, drew on some freckles, and wore denim overalls with the CPK logo pinned on the front). I have never been one to buy commercial costumes from Halloween costume stores, but this year I had zero ideas, so that's where I started looking. I quickly got frustrated, though, because every costume I saw was either some sexy getup with a short skirt and fishnet stockings, or something in which it would be impossible to move freely or sit comfortably.
So I was thrilled and relieved when Chris suggested we go as Peter and Lois Griffin. We were able to wear normal clothes, and only had to buy/borrow a few little accessories to transform us into those characters: the glasses for Chris, the red hair color for me, and the Stewie doll. I think it's far more fun to build a costume yourself, and capitalize on the characteristics you share with your alter-ego, than to just buy a costume designed by someone else.
Now that Halloween is over, is it time to start thinking about Christmas costumes? (Just kidding, I'm not that weird.)
