This weekend I had the opportunity to meet up in person with Alejandra (aka superaleja) for the first time. We've been online friends for many years, but despite living relatively close to each other (she's a New Yorker), as compared to my distance from other people in my life, until now we'd never had occasion to see each other. But this weekend she took a mini-vacation to Providence to celebrate her birthday. So on Saturday, Chris and I met up with Aleja and her other Rhode Island friend, John (who took this photo with his iPhone), for lunch at Fire + Ice. (Must stop with the parenthetical interjections.) Much pigging out ensued, along with some good conversation and laughter, and a phone call to our mutual friend Len. And by the way, aargh, I hate trying to use a phone in loud public places, having to rely on others to hold it for me and the earpiece never quite lining up so that I can actually hear anything - not to mention I lack the essential skill of focusing on the information coming in only one ear and blocking out the other. I guess that's what happens when you use speakerphones all your life.
After lunch, we headed over to Thayer Street, the trendy street in Providence where all the Brown University kids hang out. Wow... did I just refer to college students as kids? When did I get so friggin' old? We checked out the Brown bookstore and a place called Only In Rhode Island in search of Providence souvenirs for Aleja to bring back to her friends and family in New York. At the latter, we ran into an entrance threshold that was just high enough off the sidewalk that Aleja couldn't get her wheelchair in. My compliments to the store staff, though, who found a way to get us in, when many others might have just shrugged and said, "Not my problem."
We had to part ways after that, as Brooskey had been at home in his crate for several hours and would soon burst. We had a good time, though, and I hope she comes back to Rhode Island another time when we can spend more time together!
