holiday meme
I don't do these surveys too often, but I figure I'm due... Nabbed this one from Neil.
- Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Egg nog is disgusting. I love hot chocolate, but I'm trying to stay away from it, as it is soooo fattening.
- Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Apparently it depends on the house. When I was a kid, at my parents' house, he just left them under the tree. But at Chris' parents' house, they are all wrapped.
- Colored lights or white on tree/house? The more colorful, the better!
- Do you hang mistletoe? I've never bothered. I don't need an excuse to kiss my sweetie...
- When do you put your decorations up? Ideally I like to get them up the first weekend in December, but it never seems to work out that way. Here it is a week until Christmas, and we're still not done decorating.
- What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Cranberry meatballs, as my mother used to make them, are to die for.
- Favorite holiday memory as a child? In our house it was tradition to leave all of the Christmas lights on, including the tree, all night on Christmas Eve. The outside lights were to guide Santa to our house, and the tree lights to allow him to see while he worked. One Christmas, my big sister's big gift from Santa was a beanbag chair. I had snuck out of bed early Christmas morning to peek at what was left under the tree. In the dim light from the tree, the blue beanbag chair looked dark green. Panicked, I ran to my parents' room and woke up my dad, telling him that Santa had left his toy sack behind, and Christmas was going to be ruined for all the other kids he had to visit after our house!
- When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I don't think anyone ever remembers this moment in their lives.
- Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We always did when I was little. These days there isn't a lot under our tree here at the condo, so we prefer to save it all for Christmas morning. But, we do exchange Secret Santa gifts at Chris' family's Christmas Eve party.
- How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Colored lights, silver beads, lots of different types of ornaments, including a lot of clear, silvery, glittery, sparkly ones (anything that will shimmer in the lights), glass icicles, and a silver-accented angel on top.
- Snow, love it or dread it? I tend to hate snow for two reasons: because it's frickin' cold, and because of the mobility issues it presents. But despite that, a little part of me always wishes for a nice, white Christmas.
- Do you know how to ice skate? It's something I've always wished I could do, but I'd break my ankles instantly. However, I do have this crazy idea of a double-bladed skate, so that my weight could be distributed across two blades, instead of having to balance on one blade in the middle.
- Do you remember your favorite gift? No one particular gift stands out in my mind.
- What's the most important thing about the holidays for you? It's going to sound cheesy, but... it's the spirit of giving. The way that everyone gives a little more, whether to those less fortunate or just to their loved ones.
- What is your favorite holiday dessert? Oreo cookie "dirt". It was introduced to me by my big sister, and it's my favorite thing to make and bring to Chris' family's holiday gathering. The kids get a kick out of it, too. I remember how hard it was to convince them to eat it the first time we made it...
- What is your favorite holiday tradition? Driving around on Christmas Eve to look at Christmas lights. We always did it when I was young, and to this day Chris and I still do it together after we leave the family Christmas Eve shindig.
- What tops your tree? Oops, I guess I already answered this...
- Which do you prefer: giving or receiving? You know, anyone who says they enjoy giving more than receiving is full of it. I'd say I enjoy them both equally.
- Favorite Christmas Song? Really tough call... A few come to mind. Though anyone who knows me knows I'm not particularly religious, for some reason I find Amy Grant's "Breath of Heaven" very moving. I also really like her remake of Carly Simon's "The Night Before Christmas", and "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses.
- Favorite flavor of Candy Canes? Butterscotch or mint chocolate.
