For a while now I've been using Google's Browser Sync add-on for Firefox to keep my bookmarks, passwords, and cookies synchronized between my home and work PCs. Recently Google "announced", rather quietly, that they were dropping support for the plugin and it would not be updated for Firefox 3. This was bad news to me for two reasons. Firstly, because I've been having issues lately with cookies disappearing on an annoyingly frequent basis, causing me to have to constantly re-login to my favorite web sites. The only way to fix this is to delete all cookies on both computers and start over again, and the relief only lasts a couple of weeks before it starts doing it again. The second reason is that even with its quirks, I've come to depend heavily enough on Browser Sync that it has stopped me from upgrading to Firefox 3 thus far. Granted there are plenty of other bookmark synchronization options out there, but what's more important to me is the cookies and passwords.
I found out today that Google has released the Browser Sync code to the open source community. What this means is that anyone can now get their hands on the source code and improve upon it. This makes me a very happy geek-girl!
Not only does this make it pretty likely that someone will finally update the add-on for Firefox 3, maybe they will fix the cookie deletion problems as well!
