My poor, sick computer developed a new symptom late last week: it started repeatedly powering itself on. We had plugged it back in after Chris tried applying new heatsink compound to the CPU aong with a few other tweaks, to see if any of it had made a difference. It didn't. It still would either refuse to turn on at all, turn on but go into a reboot loop, or boot into Windows only to immediately blank the screen and stop responding. So we left it there on the desk, plugged in, and the next day when we were home for lunch, we started noticing beeping sounds coming from the office. I opened the door to find my computer had turned itself on and was stuck in another reboot loop. I shut it off, and a few minutes later it came on again! We had to unplug it to get it to stop turning on over and over again.
We thought maybe it was the power supply itself malfunctioning, so on Saturday we stopped at Staples and picked up a new one. This did not solve the rebooting and locking up, but it is no longer powering on at random, so I'm starting to think we have a multi-system failure on our hands. I've ordered a new motherboard which should come in tomorrow, and we'll see where that gets us. Yes, most of the components in this machine are less than a year old and still under warranty, but we're looking at a possible twenty-day turnaround for each component we have to replace, and I just can't wait that long. So, I will buy new parts and then sell the warranty replacements when they come in.
