I'm sure you know by now that I recently bought an iPhone and am madly in love with it. Before, I had a Nokia 6800 which I used with T-Mobile's prepaid service. While it was necessary for me to downgrade to a prepaid phone back when we bought the condo, over the past three years I had outgrown the phone and the limited features of the prepaid plan. The 6800's speakerphone was horrendous, and it only accepted headsets with the proprietary Nokia connector, of which there was not much selection. Not to mention that I had no internet service on the prepaid plan, and for me it is almost more useful to be able to communicate in written form wherever I go, than to have a voice conversation.
Had I known of them, I might have ended up with a bestincellphones.com cell phone instead of the iPhone (but I'm glad I didn't!). I did hunt around, trying to find something more affordable that would meet my needs, but I just wasn't happy with anything I saw. Chris already had his iPhone and was locked into his AT&T contract. I briefly considered a Palm Centro or Treo, and either of those phones would have been cheaper, but I would not have had unlimited internet access, and the monthly cost between the two of us would have been more than the cost to just add a second iPhone to his account. So even though the iPhone was a much more expensive initial purchase, we decided in the interest in minimizing our monthly bills, it was the best option.
But for those of you who need a new phone and can't afford the initial expense of an iPhone, there are cheap and even free AT&T cell phones. Or for Sprint users, how about a free Samsung Instinct? If you need more than one phone, be sure to find out what the best cell phone family plans are.
