This is a silly little rant.
Generally I try to be tolerant of spelling and grammar errors, especially in casual forms of communication such as chat, e-mail and newsgroups. Though I tend to be a perfectionist myself and proper spelling comes easily to me, I do understand that it isn't as easy for everyone. But... there are certain common mistakes which absolutely drive me bananas!
In a private newsgroup I practically live in, someone once made reference to "a munged e-mail address". The response from another member was, "What does 'mung' mean?"
Munge! Munge!! Munge!!!
It rhymes with "plunge", not "hung". "Sponge", not "dung". The word is "munge". No matter how many people say (write) it correctly, there are always those who are seemingly oblivious and continue to write "mung". I had to look up "mung" in the dictionary, and let me say, the meaning isn't even close. (To be fair, "munge" isn't even in the dictionary; apparently it was coined after the invention of this new-fangled thing called the internet, and Mr. Webster hasn't caught on yet.)
People, if you're going to mis-spell, at least try to make your mis-spelling sound like the same word!
There, I feel better now...
