a week of twittered highlights
Since I'm short on post ideas, I thought I'd do a quick run-down of the highlights of the past week (not guaranteed to be interesting, amusing, or otherwise worth reading). I've used my Twitter stream to jog my memory.
- I spent several days last week cleaning some nasty-ware off of my boss' laptop. And out of that experience comes the following public service announcement: Your anti-virus is there for a reason. If it is persistently alerting you to a problem in its functioning, don't just keep dismissing it as an annoyance, and definitely don't disable it. If you don't understand what it's trying to tell you, take it to someone who does.
- I received a $10 iTunes gift card in the mail last week as a reward for filling out a survey a short time ago. I decided to use it to buy a couple of iPhone applications I'd been wanting. One of those apps was Sketches, which lets you draw on and add text and artwork to the photos stored on your phone. In my efforts to try it out and learn how to use it, I let Vixen have her own virtual eyeglass modeling session. Note: while Sketches lets you send your handiwork to Twitter from within the application, I don't recommend doing so. The site it uploads the image to displays popup advertisements for X-rated webcam sites. Better to just e-mail it to TwitPic.
- I haven't played The Sims 2 in a very long time, but this past weekend I got the itch. So I installed the newest expansion pack which had been sitting on the dining room table for several weeks and tried to play. Unfortunately the evil copy protection software they bundle gave me problems with recognizing the game DVD, and therefore would not allow the game to start. Long story short, I got it running two days later, but not before losing all of my saved game files and downloaded game content. A happy camper I was not. It's a good thing there are only a few months left before I would have abandoned them all for The Sims 3 anyway.
- You already know about this, but I got glasses this week. The photo in the confoozled.com sidebar has been updated with a grainy iPhone pic for now, but I'll get a better one up soon. So far I've found that yes, I can indeed see much better, and apart from some sinus business this morning, I have not had a single headache since I started wearing them. I know it's only been two days so it's really too soon to tell if it's really making a difference, but my gut tells me it is. I'm still figuring out how to handle getting them on and off, cleaning them, and dealing with eyelashes and other foreign objects, but progress is being made.
- Last night Chris, along with many others, downloaded the brandy new Xbox 360 Dashboard software. You can now make a 3D avatar to represent yourself on Xbox Live. While Chris was customizing his avatar, Brooskey noticed it on the TV screen and started his "intruder alert" bark - a bark he doesn't even do when actual people come in the house. For some reason these little cartoony dudes really had him freaked out; every time Chris' avatar or that of one of his friends came on screen, he would go nuts again, and kept backing away and/or cowering under the coffee table.
- With the boss' laptop on my desk for the better part of three days last week, it occurred to me how nice it would be to have a place to stow away my wireless keyboard and claim the space on my desk for things like broken laptops, or... work. So I got the boss' permission and ordered a sliding keyboard shelf to be mounted under my desk. Staples told me it would take 7 to 28 business days to be delivered, so imagine my surprise when it arrived today. Though the assembly manual it came with was for a lateral file, my coworkers managed to put it together and install it for me in just under two hours.
